General

Unexpected Journey is definitely not hazing! The programme is all about having fun, getting to know each other and team building. The introduction week is organised by staff and students of Breda University of Applied Sciences who have your safety as their highest priority.

Unexpected Journey is the introduction week for students of the programmes of the Academy for Leisure & Events, Academy for Tourism and Academy for AI, Games & Media at Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas). During this week, as a first-year student, you will get to know your classmates and fellow students, Breda University of Applied Sciences and some of Breda’s organisations through an extensive programme full of fun activities. It is the best way to start your student time in Breda.

Facilities

We will provide facilities where you can charge your mobile phone for free. We recommend bringing a power bank to the introduction.

The organisation will provide a number of (electric) pumps you can use to inflate your air bed or mat. So, you do not need to bring your own pump.

Yes, the introduction location is accessible for disabled people. Both the BUas campus and Tulderheyde campsite have accessible toilets. We also provide paved walkways on the site.

Food and Drinks

You are not allowed to order your own food during Unexpected Journey. The organisation will ensure that sufficient meals and snacks are offered. However, bringing packed snacks (such as energy bars or biscuits) or a drinking bottle is allowed.

Do you have allergies and/or dietary requirements that we need to take into account? Then you have the option to mention this on the registration form during registration. Do not forget to tell us what type of allergy it is (allergy or intolerance). Have you already registered and not mentioned this? Then send an email to intro@buas.nl Our crew will work with our suppliers to make sure that you get suitable alternative meals.

At the introduction locations, you can pay using PIN or cash.

No, it is not possible to park your car on the Breda University of Applied Sciences campus or at Tulderheyde Campsite. You can find more information about this on this page.

Yes, it is important you should bring a bicycle. All participants will ride – via a scenic route with various activities -to Camping Tulderheyde on Tuesday 27 August. On Friday 30 August all participants will cycle back to the BUas campus. Don’t have a bike? Then you can rent one through our registration form. 

You are responsible for bringing your own luggage to Tulderheyde Campsite. In the shuttle buses there is room to take your luggage. It is important that you bring well-sealed suitcases/bags so that you do not lose any luggage.

The first day of Unexpected Journey 2025 (Monday 25 August) will take place on the BUas campus, located at Mgr. Hopmansstraat 2 in Breda. The second part of the program (Tuesday 26 August to Friday 29 August) will take place at Camping Tulderheyde in Belgium. The address of the campsite is Tulderheyde 25, 2382 Ravels, Belgium. Participation and Registration

It is not possible to leave Unexpected Journey and come back later. If you choose to leave the introduction before it ends, further participation is no longer possible. The organisation of the introduction period can make an exception to this in case of special circumstances. These have to be reported to and approved by the organisation prior to the introduction.

You can register separately for the introduction on the BUas campus (Monday 25 August) and the programme at Tulderheyde Campsite (Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August). It is not possible to register for separate programme elements. If you arrive at the introduction site later or have to leave the introduction earlier, the full cost of participation (€180.00) must still be paid.

You can register for both the program on the BUas campus (Monday 25 August) and the program at Camping Tulderheyde (Tuesday 26 August  to Friday 29 August). It is not possible to register for individual program components. If you arrive later to the introduction or need to leave earlier, the full participation fee (€175.00) must still be paid.

A full refund of the registration fee is possible if you cancel by 11 August 2025 by sending an email to intro@buas.nl. After 11 August a refund is unfortunately not possible. Please also see our General Terms and Conditions regarding this.

Participation in Unexpected Journey is not mandatory, but strongly recommended by Breda University of Applied Sciences. The introduction week is the start of your student life and ensures that you get to know your classmates and fellow students and are prepared for the start your studies.

Participating in the programme at the BUas campus on Monday 25 August is free. The cost for participating in the programme at Tulderheyde Campus from Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August is €180.00. This price includes participation in all programme elements, your own introduction shirt, various meals and a place to stay overnight. Only the costs for drinks and extra snacks you buy during the introduction are not included in the price. Are you coming to Tulderheyde campsite by shuttle bus? Then you need to buy a separate ticket (€ 25.00).  You can find more information about this on the registration page.

You can sign up for the induction until Monday 25 August 2025.

You will receive your student number in an e-mail from Breda University of Applied Sciences. This will be sent to you as soon as you meet the necessary enrolment requirements. The e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you entered in Studielink. This e-mail also contains the password you need to log in to your student e-mail (studentnummer@buas.nl) or to more.buas.nl, for example.

You can only participate in Unexpected Journey if you start a programme at the Academy for Leisure & Events, Academy for Tourism or Academy for AI, Games & Media of Breda University of Applied Sciences in the school year 2025-2026. Programme

All participants must wear their introduction shirts visibly during the programme. It is possible to order one or more additional introduction shirts for a fee. Please indicate this when completing the registration form. Have you already registered and forgotten to indicate this? Then send an e-mail to intro@buas.nl

The campus programme will take place on Monday 25 August on the BUas campus. It focuses on a first introduction to classmates, study coach and the BUas campus. It will include practical information on the first weeks of study. The programme at Tulderheyde Campus will take place from Tuesday 26 August to Friday 29 August. The focus is on getting to know class and study mates better, fun, team building and getting to know some of Breda’s organisations. We recommend signing up for both programmes.

Have you enrolled in a Dutch-language programme? Then Dutch will be spoken within your class and you will generally (but not exclusively) attend programme components in Dutch. Are you enrolling in an English-language programme? Then you will communicate in English within your class and programme components will be offered in English. Because Breda University of Applied Sciences is an international university of applied sciences, the language used during the introduction will be English (and in some cases bilingual).

The introduction week starts on Monday 25 August and ends on Friday 29 August 2025. On Monday 25 August, the programme will take place on the BUas campus. From Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August, the programme will take place at Tulderheyde Campsite. You will receive the final start and finish times in the week prior to the introduction in an e-mail which we will send to the e-mail address you used to register in Studielink. You will only receive this e-mail when you have registered and your registration for Unexpected Journey is complete.

Safety and house rules

Smoking is only allowed in designated areas. This also applies to e-cigarettes. NIX18 applies to this. It is forbidden for participants/visitors under the age of 18 to smoke.

During Unexpected Journey, NIX18 applies. It is not allowed for participants/visitors under 18 years of age to buy, accept or consume alcoholic beverages.

Possessing, dealing or using soft and/or hard drugs is strictly prohibited during Unexpected Journey. In case of violation, security will be alerted and the study coach and/or programme coordinator will be informed. In case of dealing in soft and/or hard drugs, the police will also be notified.

Only participants of the introduction week, guests/partners invited by the organisation or suppliers have access to the introduction location of Unexpected Journey. This is enforced by the organisation and our security.

The deadline to register as a crew member for Unexpected Journey 2025 has passed. Do you think you can make a great contribution to the introduction? Then email employeeintro@buas.nl

It is not allowed to take photos or videos for promotional purposes during Unexpected Journey, unless otherwise agreed with the organisation. Taking photos or videos for personal use is allowed. We have a media team that takes professional photos and videos during the introduction. These will be published on our social media channels after the introduction.
